Aim: How do we sketch the graph of y=tanx?

When we graph the basic tan graph we have to remember a few things:
1. tan = sin/cos
2. the tan graph will have asymptotes. These are places where the tan graph will be undefined.

Watch the following video on how to graph the basic tan graph. Once you get the idea of how to graph a tan function, you can then begin in to add in other turning points and phase shifts.

basic tan graph

Graph the following in your notebook. Don't forget about phase shift. Use your graphing calculator and/or the unit circle to help you if you are unsure.

  1. y=tan4x
  2. y=-tanx
  3. y=tan(x - pi/4)
  4. y=3tan 1/2 x

Journal entry: The graph of y=tanx is a non-continuous periodic function. Explain the characteristic(s) of the tangent function that causes these discontinuities.
